I live in the US and travelled to Mexico recently 2/022, to attend a wedding. I reserved 2 cars on the AirportRentalCars website from Fox car rentals, for several days. I noticed that insurance for $13/day for each car could be purchased but must be purchased at least 2 hrs before pick up. I know that US auto insurance companies do not cover cars rented in Mexico, and suspected that if I didn't purchase the insurance of $13/day per car online, that the insurance at the counter would be a lot higher than $13/day. So I purchased the insurance which was charged, along with the car rental charges, on my credit card. When my group and I arrived at the Leon airport, we were driven to the Fox car rental office by shuttle close to the Leon airport. I saw a customer arguing with the woman there about being charged over $500 for car insurance. It was all in Spanish so I didn't grasp the real problem. I assumed that this man had not purchased insurance online prior to arrival as I did. However, it was my turn next, and I
Was told by the woman that Fox doesn't accept the insurance I had purchased online on the AirportRentalCars website, and that I would have to pay $550 as insurance coverage for each car. I was pissed by this dishonesty even though I showed her screen shots of the insurance. I was very disgusted and told them to take me and my group back to the airport. There we checked on 3 reputable companies (Hertz, Budget and Avis) and chose Hertz which gave us the best deal, including full coverage. It cost us about 25% (yes, 25%) for the car rentals than it would have cost, had I fallen prey to the crooked Fox car rental. What they do is to put their cars as costing about 50% less for daily rates, but appears that they then jack up insurance even if you have purchased it in advance. I have heard of Fox car rentals before, and I think I had forgotten that they have a poor reputation so will never use them again. I do have a problem with AirportRentalCars having Fox on their website and find it hard to believe that they don't know that Fox car rentals is crooked. Ace car rentals is the other cheap car rental place on the website and wonder if they play the same game as Fox. Interestingly, AirportRentalCars website is powered by Priceline.com. Interestingly, there was charge of $65 ($13/day x5) for only one car on my credit card, and I will be contesting that charge since I never rented the car. Disgusting experience.
